NDC This seems to be a very common problem for many Windows XP users so I thought I'd post this...

If you're running Windows XP with SP1, you may get pauses for as long as 15 seconds when accessing folders, executing an application, etc. There is an update to fix this problem. However, many people tend to miss this update because it's not listed as a Critical Update nor does it list this update as a fix to this problem.

Most likely cause of this is from explorer.exe located in your Windows directory.

Do the following to check the version of explorer.exe installed on your system:

1. Open My Computer

2. Navigate to Windows directory and right click on explorer.exe and select Properties.

3. Click on the Version tab and highlight File Version.

Most likely, the version you have installed will be: Explorer.exe (Version: 6.00.2800.1106 ) If this is the case, proceeed to Step 4.

4. Download the patch from the link below. Although the Microsoft page will not mention anything related to this problem, this will most likely fix your problem as it has for many systems I've worked on with the same problem.

5. Click on the "Download the 820291 package now" to download the update and simply install it and reboot and your problem should be history... :)
RFB My XP system ran fine without any problems until I decided to do a fresh install after getting my new hard disk. I installed SP1 and got all the critical updates and whenever I accessed "My Computer", the system would hang for 9 seconds or so. I spoke to NDC over IM and he told me to try the solution mentioned above and it fixed the problem! Thanks you the man
Xeroid Thanks NDC. I've noticed my PC pausing like that on occasion. The funny thing is that I was looking at the 820291 package on the windows update site the other day trying to decide if I wanted to download it or wait till later.

You guessed it . . . I decided to wait.

The new version of EXPLORER.EXE, BTW is 6.0.2800.1221 after you run the update.

Thanks D00D! :D
